Joseph R. Pye

Joseph R. Pye was born and raised in Charleston, SC. He is finishing his 48th year in education; forty-six of those years he has served in Dorchester School District Two as a teacher, principal, Personnel Director and for the past twenty years as the District’s Superintendent. While serving as Superintendent, the Dorchester Two has experienced phenomenal growth and now serves over 26,000 students. Despite dealing with the challenges of continued growth, coupled with funding challenges, the District continues to maintain its high academic achievement and top ranking in the State under Mr. Pye’s leadership and direction. Flowertown Elementary School became the first school in Dorchester School District Two to be recognized as a Palmetto’s Finest School during Mr. Pye’s tenure as its Principal.

While serving as Superintendent, the Dorchester Two has experienced phenomenal growth and now serves over 26,000 students. Despite dealing with the challenges of continued growth, coupled with funding challenges, the District continues to maintain its high academic achievement and top ranking in the State under Mr. Pye’s leadership and direction. Flowertown Elementary School became the first school in Dorchester School District Two to be recognized as Palmetto’s Finest School during Mr. Pye’s tenure as its Principal. There are now twelve schools in the District that hold that distinctive honor.

Mr. Pye has received numerous honors and awards throughout his storied career. The Citadel School of Education inducted him into the Wall of Fame as a champion of education in 2013. The South Carolina Association of School Administrators named Mr. Pye the South Carolina Superintendent of the Year in 2012. The Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees recognized Mr. Pye’s service to education and named Joseph R. Pye Elementary School in his honor in 2011. Charleston Southern University bestowed upon him an honorary Doctor of Education degree in 2001. He currently serves as a member of Engaging Creative Minds’ Board, the Citadel Zucker Family School of Education Development Advisory Board, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Executive Leadership Council. Mr. Pye has also served as Chairman of the United Way Educator Committee and as a member of both the Board of Directors of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors for Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union. An avid supporter of parent involvement, Mr. Pye served as the second Vice President of the South Carolina PTA and was named SC PTA Principal of the Year while at Flowertown Elementary School. He continues his true passion for children and the education profession by teaching Sunday school at Summerville Baptist Church.
